Level 1 Introduction to Forest School Principles

Explore and experience all aspects of the Forest School approach, also learning a range of activities to use with your groups. The course is accredited by APTEd

Over the two days of the course you will:

  • Experience a Forest School session
  • Explore the Forest School ethos and principles how it can benefit groups of all ages.
  • Learn practical skills and activities to use with groups in an outside setting, including: sensory exploration, shelter building, games and using natural materials.
  • Develop an understanding of managing risk and how to work safely in an outdoor setting.
  • Learn about the woodland environment and its wildlife and how to minimise impact.
  • Make a start on written work for your portfolio (to be completed in your own time to gain the accreditation).

This course requires the following to be completed:

  • 2 days taught time on the course
  • 14 hours self study time – including a minimum 2 hour observation of a Forest School session and time to complete written work in portfolio
  • A DBS (formerly CRB) check to have been undertaken by the organisation/group you work or volunteer with.


Introduction to Forest School Principles Level 1 certificate (QCF).
