Course Description

Participants will explore and experience all aspects of the Forest School approach, learning a range of activities to use with groups.

Over the two days, the course allows participants to:

  • Experience a Forest School session.
  • Explore the Forest School ethos and principles how it can benefit groups of all ages.
  • Learn practical skills and activities to use with groups in an outside setting, including: sensory exploration, shelter building, games and using natural materials.
  • Develop an understanding of managing risk and how to work safely in an outdoor setting.
  • Learn about the woodland environment and its wildlife and how to minimise impact.
  • Make a start on written work for a portfolio (to be completed in participants own time to gain the accreditation).

Course Requirements

The Level 1 course requires:

  • 2 days taught time on the course
  • 14 hours self-study time – including a minimum 2 hour observation of a Forest School session and time to complete written work in portfolio
  • A DBS (formerly CRB check) to have been undertaken by the organisation/group the participant works or volunteers with.

    Jon has been working for the Forest of Avon Trust since 2010 and has been leading its Natural Connections programme. He now manages its training activities and continues to lead Forest School activities.
